Medical Emergencies

Maida Vale Primary School takes student health and safety seriously. Staff follow the school’s first aid and emergency procedures when a student becomes unwell or experiences a medical emergency.

What happens in a medical emergency?

Depending on the circumstances, staff may:

  • Provide first aid and follow the student’s documented emergency response plan, where available.
  • Arrange appropriate medical assistance and contact emergency services when required.
  • Contact the student’s parent or carer as soon as practicable.
  • Record the incident and the actions taken.

Where urgent medical attention is required, staff will act to protect the student’s health and safety. The school will not delay seeking emergency assistance while waiting to contact a parent or carer.

Helping us respond quickly

Parents and carers can help the school respond appropriately by:

  • Providing accurate information about medical conditions and known risks.
  • Supplying required management and emergency response plans.
  • Ensuring emergency medication and equipment are current and available in accordance with the student’s plan.
  • Keeping emergency contact details up to date.
  • Advising the school promptly of changes to the student’s health or treatment.

Please ensure the school can contact you or another appropriate emergency contact during the school day.

Allergies and anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that requires urgent medical attention.

If your child has a known risk of anaphylaxis, please ensure the school has the required management and emergency response documentation and medication. Notify the school immediately if the plan or medication changes.

For information and the relevant plan, visit the Health Care Plans and Medical Conditions page or access Severe Allergy or Anaphylaxis — Form 4.

Preparing for a medical emergency

If your child has a medical condition that may require an urgent response, please ensure the school has the appropriate management and emergency response plan, medication and emergency contact details.

Please contact the school office if you are unsure which plan is required. Notify the school immediately if your child’s condition, medication or emergency response instructions change.

After a medical incident

The school will take appropriate steps following an incident, which may include contacting parents or carers, documenting the incident and reviewing support arrangements where necessary.

Please contact the school if you have questions about an incident involving your child or need to update their health care information.

If your child has a medical condition that may require an emergency response, please contact the Maida Vale Primary School office to discuss the required documentation and support arrangements.
